MY TOP 3 TIPS Working with CLIENTS

I’ve enjoyed designing for a range of clients over the years. From interior designers to showbiz events. I love the collaboration and the new directions this has taken me. These experiences have taught me three valuable things about working with clients, that I’m going to share with you today.

Keep it simple!

When I was studying design I had a tutor who’s zen minimal approach really made an impression.  Although that’s not how I would describe myself (I’m more Tigger!) I often remind myself of his calm and focus and try to apply it in my work. When I’m working on something new there’s an excitement and energy that comes from bouncing around those initial ideas. Sometimes this generates lots of avenues, but the joy is in drilling down and finding that "a-ha" moment. When a client comes to me, we start by discussing what they want to achieve . They may start with a set idea for a product but digging a bit deeper,  asking how they want to feel, what problem they want to solve really adds value. As a designer, you bring that deeper level of experience to the table and can work on ways to help your customer.

Here are my three simple tips:

1- Ask the right questions, perhaps you could ask them to complete a brief, just remember to keep it short, four or five questions is enough. Don’t bore them, working together is meant to be fun! Ask what they liked about your work, it might be your use of colour, pattern or something you didn’t notice. Then take that element and weave it in, to give the project your signature style.

2- I like to offer solutions, but not make this overwhelming. I will offer no more than three ideas to begin with. These become the starting point and any additional ideas can be added as the work and your relationship develops.

3- Keep communicating, at times clients will deviate from the initial plan. This is only natural and happens because they are excited about the project and are still thinking about what it might look like. Sometimes these new bits of information can be helpful, other times not so much, however listen to your client and help them, that’s your job. A flexible approach has been my best friend over the years, even if I’ve screamed into a pillow at times!

Add a day to your leadtime

Whether this is the first or fiftieth time you’ve made your product, factor in some extra time for "just in case” scenarios. Particularly if you have a supply chain, which could include materials, couriers or even childcare. I pride myself on delivering on time, so this is super important to me.

  • A picture is worth a thousand words

It’s true! Ask for some reference images and what the client likes about the product.

  • Make a call

In a digital world it’s easy to email everything, but an old fashion telephone call can really help fill in those gaps and learn more about your client.

  • Trust your style

Remember they like what you do. Don’t create something you wouldn’t want to put your name to!
